Intro

As my grandfather used to say, there are many ways to skin a cat.
... now that I think about it, maybe that's why he wasn't allowed near animal shelters.

Anyway, starting August. There are many ways in which you can start your account, and this guide is by no means the "Meta" method for starting.

My advice to you is to experiment and do what you find fun. If you are struggling though, this guide will give you a general outline of what's good to do.

Part 0: Prerequisites

Do you have to do these steps? No. Should you? Probably.

FAQ

You should check out the FAQ for insight into some very commonly asked questions. There is a very good chance a question you're about to ask is posted in there.

Talents & Prestige

I highly recommend you read up on August's two unique systems - Talents and the Prestige system. These systems go hand in hand with making your account stronger, and an understanding of this system will make everything make more sense.

Voting

Voting is one of the best way to support August, and you get some great rewards for doing it! I suggest you read the Voting page for all the details, or do ::vote in game to be redirected immediately. We thank you for your support!

Part 1: Picking a Path

You've read the FAQ, you've voted, and now you're looking for something to do. From here, you have two main paths; Skilling and PvM.

The beauty of it is that you can also switch back and forth at any time.

Skilling

I may be biased as a Skiller, but I found that starting off doing non-combat skills was the best early game boost for me.

Gaining talent points is the name of the game in August, and skilling offers some very easy early points to help bolster your account. Additionally, Slayer counts as a non-combat skill, so early Talent points in the Skilling talent tree will help boost your slayer gains later on.

A very popular method to start skilling is to do Thieving or Runecrafting, as both offer extremely high XP/hour options, which results in large amounts of Talent points. Additionally, Thieving offers you money, which is always nice, and Runecrafting will help stockpile your runes for your Magic training that will come.

No matter what you choose, I recommend that you visit the Skilling Token Store and pick up a Skilling outfit and the Gatherer's Axe and Pickaxe, as they will come in handy.

PvM

If you've decided Combat is your preferred route, look no further. To begin your PvM journey, you should look into the Prayer guide and Slayer guide, written by yours truly.

Prayer

Enemies in August hit VERY hard. Protection prayers are a must for early game PvM. Killing Chickens outside of the home area is a great way to start. Collect their bones and use them on the altar at home until you're 43 Prayer.

Once you have protection prayers, you're basically set to do any standard Slayer task. Nearly all Slayer tasks will only require you to pray 1 combat style to prevent all incoming damage from them.
